Wild West And Congress of Rough Riders of the World Cowboys have their origins in the rise of the beef market and long distance cattle rides after the American Civil War. Cowboys worked on very large, arid ranches with low carrying capacity in the southern and mid-west states of America. Herds of cattle were driven north by teams of cowboys who camped in the open and were fed by their "cookies" from a chuck wagon that accompanied the drives.

Sometimes the drives were attacked by rival cowboys or groups of Indians who were resentful of the damage done and the use of land they considered their own.
